Cloud Cover – The perfect weather conditions for fishing!

Over the past few days the south eastern part of the country has seen a thick blanket of cloud lay overhead. This cloud cover creates perfect feeding conditions for freshwater species. And it’s even better when there is minimal rain as it allows for more comfortable fishing conditions for us. The rain that we have received has been minimal scattered showers which, nothing more than a 2-5mm. Not enough to ruin the waterways with rising water.

Now why do fisherman love to fish in this weather? Because this thick cloud cover that lasts all day long blocks out the harsh sunlight creating one big shadow. You have probably heard about targeting the shadows, as this is where the fish will be hiding. Well with the overcast weather we now have shadow everywhere and this means all the fish will be more confident to attack and feed.

The fish feel this way because the cloud cover makes the water darker which means they can hide from their prey more efficiently and therefore hunt more effectively. Their prey (small baitfish) feel like they are more hidden and therefore will venture out into the open. That’s pretty much it in a nutshell and I would have to say fishing in thick overcast conditions is my favourite time to fish. I would confidently say that 90% of my most successful fishing trips have come in overcast weather.

But once that sun breaks through a gap in the clouds, everything runs for cover and the opportunity dries up. It needs to be thick cloud cover where the sun doesn’t break through at all. So let’s hope these conditions hang around for a bit longer.
