The 5 Best Lure Types for Murray Cod

Welcome to the latest update! It has been some time since our last update so I thought it was about time to share with you all what has been happening at Social Fishing.

Social Fishing Website & Complete Guide Series

In the background, behind the website and the pictures on Facebook the team have been working away on the final videos for the ‘Complete Guide – Lure Fishing Series’. It’s almost complete with only a handful of filming trips left over the next few months and then editing them all together. There are so many videos in this series and I want to thank everyone for their patience while we work away on the series.

We are set to launch the finished tutorials (this will include all 8 series) for the start of December and hopefully in time for cod opening. One of the most popular series will be the ‘Murray Cod on Surface’ tutorial. It’s jam packed with tips and also plenty of surface action, by far one of my favourite series of the lot.

We have also been refilming majority of the already released series to improve the film quality and content. The ‘Golden Perch in Dams’ series has had a complete work over and will be worth watching.

Due to all the time going into the filming and production of the Complete Guide Series we have dropped back on the short video tips, reports and articles across the website. We are still managing to upload some content but towards the end of this year it will pick right up and we will be right back in the swing of producing heaps of FREE content for you all to enjoy.

Stay tuned as there are plenty of exciting things coming!

Fishing in spring

I wanted to touch on the fishing opportunities for the next few months. We’re already towards the end of September which is great as it is one of the toughest months to fish. I like to call it the ‘transition’ month where we turn our focus from Murray Cod to other species like Trout, Golden Perch and Bass.

It’s always tough going because the water is still on the cool side and the fish need the spring warmth to switch them on. We had a very cool start to spring but as I write this the sun has just past 20 degrees (with some places seeing high 20s) and with a week of these temperatures the Golden Perch and Trout will fire right up.

All of this warm weather not only warms up the water but it also brings out the insect and bug life! This means food and therefore hungry fish!

Golden Perch

By the long weekend in October the Golden Perch should be starting to feed up in majority of impoundments like Blowering, Burrinjuck, Wyangala, Burley Griffin, Googong, Windamere and Copeton. Some lakes take a little longer before the fish feed e.g. Lake Eildon and Lake Burrendong. These locations fish better towards the end of October and into November.

Note: This is just a rough guide for the above locations and it can vary from year to year.

Trout

The Trout in the alpine lakes like Jindabyne, Eucumbene and Tantangra are already feeding really well and have been for a few weeks. The Trout in Eucumbene love to feed on yabbys at this time of year as they are starting to come out after the winter. Any lure that represents a yabby works really well, for example, soft plastics, vibes, blades and hardbody lures.

Trolling is a very successful technique at this time of year and the best approach is to use deep diving hardbodys and troll them on the bottom. You want to make sure they are tapping away on the bottom and kicking up mud as this imitates a fleeing yabby. The 90mm Strike Force Whipper Snappers are perfect for this.

Best trolling depth during the day is between 3-6m. Fish shallower in low light periods and deeper during the middle of the day.

Bass

The Bass season is open and is only going to get better and better with the hotter weather. Team member Adam Smith is heading away for the long weekend in search of some Brogo Dam Bass, so we will have an update from him when he returns from his adventure.

That’s a quick wrap from me! Now is the time to be getting out and enjoying some warm days and great fishing.
